a space to enjoy good company and deep conversations without the need for alcohol
We offer an alternative to the typical noisy bar scene that’s calmer, more mindful, and emphasizes quality social interactions. Hiterland was born from co-founder Stephen Jeffrey’s isolating experience of recovery from alcohol addiction. Nearly every social activity is centred around alcohol. Our mission is to show that this can be different.
We know that many people want to have a more relaxed space to socialize on a deeper and more meaningful level. Hinterland is for those people. Whatever your reasons for skipping the booze, Hinterland welcomes you.
Stephen's Story
Hinterland was born from a vision shared by our co-founder, Stephen Jeffreys, whose personal journey with sobriety inspired the creation of this space.
Five years ago, Stephen faced a pivotal challenge with alcohol addiction. His relationship with alcohol was seemingly innocent at first, socializing with friends while having a few drinks. But over time, as alcohol became more and more central to his life, Stephen started drinking more and more heavily, causing harm to his mental as well as physical health.
The realization that his drinking had become a problem came sharply when a counsellor from a sobriety organization pointed out, “If alcohol is costing you more than time and money, you’re an alcoholic.”
The road to recovery was isolating for Stephen, as social activities typically involved drinking, which were too triggering for him. This experience sparked a desire to create a different kind of social space—one that didn’t revolve around alcohol but instead promoted meaningful human connections.
Hinterland is here for everyone who wants to have a great time, but doesn’t feel the need to get drunk to do so. Whether you’re in recovery, sober-curious, or simply don’t fancy a drink.
